About
Long Dark House was created by an avid reader who fell in love with scary stories and science fiction early on. Growing up immersed in imaginative worlds and speculative futures shaped a lifelong love of books that explore the strange, the unsettling, and the unknown.
Based in Alexandria, Virginia, Long Dark House is a Black woman-owned indie bookstore concept rooted in community, curiosity, and the belief that bookstores should be places to gather, linger, and connect. The goal extends beyond selling books. Long Dark House is envisioned as a welcoming third space for readers or curious community members who value thoughtful conversation and shared experiences.
The future brick-and-mortar home for Long Dark House is planned for the DMV area and will include:
-
A carefully curated selection of horror, sci-fi, and speculative fiction
-
A themed café for gatherings
-
Space for readings, clubs, and intimate events
Until then, Long Dark House will begin through pop-ups and community events, starting in Summer 2026. The journey toward opening a permanent location, including lessons learned and behind-the-scenes decisions, will be shared through an upcoming blog.
Long Dark House is being built slowly and intentionally, with care for both the stories on the shelves and the community that will shape the space.
